The New Science: Fascial Remodeling

Fascial remodeling is a newly emerging science, and the treatment of chronic discomfort and aesthetic issues with the use of the Ashley Black "Fasciablasters" (TM), a group of FDA approved class 1 medical devices, has become my passion and the focus of my private practice. Fascial remodeling is NOT myofascial release, and it is NOT massage. It's MUCH more.

By utilizing the power of the Fasciablaster tools, combined with the principles of applied pressure and tension, fascial remodeling literally relocates and restores restricted, adhesed, and distorted fascia to its healthy, original state.

I have over 15 years experience working in physical rehabilitation as an Occupational Therapist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist; and I have spent the past decade studying fascial lines and the effect of fascial distortion on movement and function. I've developed a highly effective treatment protocol that actually restores the anatomical fascial lines to health. This innovation has allowed me to treat conditions often believed to be irreversible, including frozen shoulder, scoliosis, arthritis, spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, and TMJ. I have also achieved incredible results in erasing wrinkles, diminishing and completely fading white stretch marks and eliminating cellulite.

Unfortunately in todays medical model, soft tissue injuries to the body often go ignored, or slip through the cracks of insurance covered therapy services. Historically, the fascial system has been minimally studied and primarily perceived solely as a container, ie just another connective tissue holding structures together; when it is actually a conduit by which the circulatory (blood), lymphatic (immune system and fluid regulation) and nervous (brain and motor) systems travel. Why do I need an initial assessment?

Fascial remodeling treatment is unique in manual therapy. I am a licensed/certified occupational therapist, fasciologist, and certified lymphedema therapist. Your treatment is tailored specifically to you, and this requires an intensive evaluation so that the therapy can be designed to be maximally effective for each clients specific needs. This evaluation also covers your personal medical history including injuries, surgeries, and any medical conditions I need to be aware of monitoring during treatment.

What is the treatment session like?

Both treatment clinics have an infrared sauna, which is the optimal method for full body heating (as well as a host of other healing effects). Heating is a KEY component of treatment success. Clients spend at 15 minutes at the beginning of every session in the sauna, which will enable the tissue to respond easily to the remodeling. The fascial work will occur on an ergonomic massage chair and/or massage table, using bolsters and towel rolls to accommodate any and all positioning needs. The therapist will utilize the full spectrum of Fasciablaster (TM) tools to heal the fascia, both large and small claws; as well as lymphatic flushing and manual lymph drainage techniques. We will also use a full array of Ashley Black's patented gel ice pack modalities for anti-inflammatory effect during/following treatment.

Will it hurt?

The fascial scarring and adhesions that come from injuries, surgeries, etc. are multi layered, complex, and in many cases deeply attached to underlying structures. By removing and treating these adhesions we are able to achieve pain relief and improve function. However, the process of healing the scar tissue can and will be painful at times. Clients have reported localized pain at treatment areas during sessions of up to 8/10, which resolves quickly once releases are achieved. YOU are always in control of your session, and your therapist is in constant communication with you during your session to judge your pain tolerance and adjust treatment accordingly.

Why are there bruises?

Fascial scarring and adhesions are live tissue, infused with blood and nerve endings. With the fascial treatment process, there are often bruises as blood vessels are broken during treatment and in many cases increased blood perfusion as the scar tissue allows new normal blood flow to be restored. The bruising is part of the healing, and indicates you are on your journey to fascial recovery! Arnica gel (available over the counter in most drugstores) applied topically is an excellent remedy for speeding recovery from bruising.

How many sessions should I purchase?

We highly recommend that all new patients start with the five session starter pack. This will give us time to work on initial treatment goals, determine the level of tolerance of fascial manipulation treatment and develop the treatment schedule that works the best for each individual. The three pack package is designed for the minor aesthetic client who may have fascial manipulation tools of their own and requires guidance in use for their own personal treatment needs, and want to see immediate benefit in a very small specific area, i.e. facial wrinkles. If your budget allows for only one, then the single session package is for you! We accomplish major relief in just one session, especially in very minor pain issues... ie tight back or rotator cuff from overuse. Subsequent sessions can then be purchased in 1,2,4,6, or 8 packs.

How long will I need treatment?

The answer to this will be entirely different for every client. Minor aesthetic improvements can often be achieved in one to three sessions, ie facial wrinkles. Major trauma and pain management goals can take 3 to 6 months depending on the level of severity. 90% of clients feel significant relief within the first 5 sessions, and then go on to maintain fascial health with appointments every 4-6 weeks.

Why does the treatment session vary?

Fascial remodeling is VERY different from any other form of manual therapy, including massage and myofascial release. Our goal is to restore the entire fascial line to health and normal anatomy, achieving marked shifts in body function, movement and aesthetics at each and every session. Treatment sessions are completely individualized to the client, AND to what is preeminent that day. For example, one session may be entirely focused on addressing a shoulder impingement and neck pain, and the next time we address cellulite or belly overhang. Pain tolerance is also widely varied, and tolerance to the treatment improves with each session. Larger areas like backs and thighs are able to be worked for longer periods than smaller areas like shoulders and neck.

What should I expect following treatment?

Generalized fatigue and muscle soreness are the most common effects, usually lasting 24 - 72 hours. Fascial tissue is the carrier for the lymphatic system, the primary means of the body to detoxify itself. Bound and adhesed fascia contains toxins that are trapped in the lymphatic system, often noticeable by its yellow/gray discoloration and a “lumpy” or “dense” feeling in lymph nodes and along lymphatic pathways. Fascial remodeling heals and cleanses the fascia of stored disease, toxins and inflammatory substances. This toxic debris will eliminate through the skin, in the form of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, as well as through the sweat, urine and bowel. The sinus system will also express, in the form of mucus, which may result in increased coughing, sneezing and sinus drainage. If the fascial adhesions were compressing nerve structures, then you may also experience neurological manifestations of the nerves regenerating, including itching, tingling and increased motor neuron activity, i.e. restlessness.

Increase water intake to promote maximal hydration, and try to drink non-chlorinated filtered water, and/or alkaline water. Increase activities to encourage sweating and release toxins, and allow the body plenty of rest and recovery between sessions. If it is available to you, saunas, steam rooms, and hot Epsom salt baths are all excellent detoxifiers. I also highly recommend local ice application to minimize inflammation after treatment over the course of the first 24 to 48 hours.

Why might I experience intense emotions during/after treatment?

Fascial tissue is the main conduit for the nervous system and its structures, and as such, it can carry stored memories, especially of pain and trauma. Releasing the fascial restrictions containing these painful events will allow for full psychological and physical healing to occur, but can also cause the associated emotions to rise to the conscious mind during or following sessions. I refer to this as the "healing crisis" nearly always followed by the profound emotional freedom that is found on the other side of the trauma.

Why should I take progress photos?

We have all heard the quote a picture is worth 1000 words. It can be hard to track progress, especially when you may be experiencing the other side of the coin of “the healing crisis”, detoxification and fatigue related to treatment. Pictures will reinforce the success of the therapy, and provide needed encouragement as you work towards your ultimate goals. If you would like, I am able to assist with taking progress photos, and I may also ask to include you in my book of success stories, to inspire and encourage other patients.

Who is Ashley Black and what are the Fasciablasters?

Ashley Black invented the first Fasciablaster device in 2014, following a devastating infection in her hip which left her barely able to walk. She successfully treated herself with the device; and went on to work with numerous professional athletes and celebrities treating sports injuries, cellulite and any number of fascial deformities. Several years and many devices on the market later, Ashley has the largest women's only Facebook group (Fasciablasters for Women....over 400K!) devoted to Fasciablasting and supporting one another through the healing journey. In 2022, she increased her mission to begin training clinicians on use of the tools to perform Fasciablasting for clients, and Bunny graduated from this program, known as the Fascia Advancement Academy, in November 2022.
